A childhood rhyme has become reality. On July 18, 2026, Skyroot Aerospace launched its Vikram-1 rocket from Sriharikota. The rocket reached low Earth orbit at 453 km in 16 minutes. The mission made India the third country, after the United States and China, with a private company capable of orbital launches.
One of the six payloads stood out. It was a diamond artwork named Cosmic Bloom.
COSMOS Diamonds, based in Bengaluru, created the piece. It features 32 lab-grown pear-cut diamonds with a total weight of 16.9 carats. The diamonds are set in 18-karat BIS-hallmarked gold and shaped like a lotus.
Engineers tested the artwork for vibration, structural strength, and high G-forces before launch. These are the same tests used for satellite hardware. The jewellery passed every test while keeping its fine finish.
The company says Cosmic Bloom is the first piece of fine jewellery sent into space. It has also applied to Asia Records for recognition as the first Indian diamond brand to achieve the milestone.
The project was led by Sanjana Tripuramallu, founder of COSMOS Diamonds. She has shared the challenges of building the company. She faced challenges finding machinery, sourcing materials, hiring people, and dealing with gender bias.
Skyroot co-founder Pawan Kumar Chandana linked the mission to the nursery rhyme about a “diamond in the sky.” The lotus design also reflects creation in Indian tradition. The lab-grown diamonds represent carbon shaped by heat and pressure, the same process that forms diamonds in nature.
Skyroot and COSMOS have followed similar paths. Skyroot was founded in 2018 by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka. It later became India’s first space-tech unicorn with a valuation of $1.1 billion. Both companies entered industries dominated by established players.
The mission also launched a new business opportunity. On August 1, 2026, COSMOS Diamonds will introduce the Lotus Collection at its HSR Layout store in Bengaluru. The collection is inspired by Cosmic Bloom. Every piece is designed, grown, and finished in India.
For COSMOS Diamonds, the launch is more than a milestone. It gives the company a verified link to a successful space mission. That story is unique and difficult for competitors to match.
